Mannat Murad – Recap of episode 27
Let’s recap the latest episode of the Geo TV drama. There is lot going on in Mannat Murad episode 27. Mannat (Iqra Aziz) and Murad (Talha Chahour) seem to be in a constant state of conflict. Mannat also discusses the pros and cons of getting a job with her friend.
What starts off as a cold war in the beginning of the episode, soon becomes hot. The house being a crowded one adds to the tension.
The drama series builds on some of the time-honored legacy themes of joint-family system, conflicting family values, and gender equality. These issues prevail, so they make for fair game. Other subtler themes touch upon mental health and stress.
Murad’s youngest sister makes friendly overtures to Mannat and offers to help her with her chores. Mannat walks in on a discussion between Murad’s older sister and Mother regarding a marriage proposal for one of Murad’s sisters.
She offers her opinion on the matter and advises against marrying a person who is not gainfully employed. Tempers flare and the argument escalates.
The slap heard around Pakistan
Meanwhile, Murad returns home to find Mannat, his mother, and sister in the middle of a heated exchange. His sister and mother start crying. Murad asks Mannat to apologize to them, but Mannat refuses.
Murad slaps Mannat. He reaches to console her, and Mannat slaps him back. Murad’s mother faints and his sister and brother-in-law make a big scene. Murad feels humiliated. Meanwhile, Mannat (rightly) feels that no one has a right to slap her.
Afterward, Mannat calls her sister-in-law on the phone and tells her that Murad assaulted her. Her sister-in-law, Sabiha (Uzma Hassan) rushes to their home, where Murad’s sister and brother-in-law confront her.
Upon hearing that Mannat slapped Murad back, Sabiha is perplexed and chides Mannat, but Mannat refuses to be apologetic.
Mannat packs her clothes and is dragging a suitcase down the stairs, when Murad approaches her and takes the handle, gently. Will he ask her to stay, or be nonchalant? Only time will tell.
The acting is good and the direction is compelling, but we would like to have seen a stronger take on gender-based violence from a Geo TV drama. Let’s not normalize it, consciously or unconsciously.
