Saba Qamar Drama, Serial Killer, is a love letter to film noir

Recapping episode 4 of Serial Killer

The aesthetics of Green TV lend well to the Saba Qamar drama, Serial Killer. For starters, it is shot in 16:9 aspet ratio, giving a cinematic feel. The subdued colors, low lighting, smoke-infused scenes, and an unnerving soundtrack and score make for compelling viewing. Not only for film noir fans like me, but it will, hopefully, gain traction with a wider audience.

Meanwhile, critics are giving it rave views, and rightly so. The script is strong, the direction is stylish and the acting is solid.

Episode 4 of the drama Serial Killer is especially interesting because we see the first near-brush between Saba Qamar‘s Sarah and Faiza Gillani‘s Babra. Although they didn’t meet, the larger-than-life Babra is on the obsessive Sarah’s radar. Will Babra emerge as the antagonist to Sara’s protagonist, remains to be seen. One thing is for sure, she has the makings of an excellent femme fatale.

The Killers

In the spirit of a true whodunit, each episode of Serial Killer brings to the surface a character with a motive to kill Zarish. Was it her brother or her lover? Or was it Iman or the Rikshaw driver? Also, what is Babra’s role in her murder?

In episode 4 the pressure mounts on Sarah from her boss to deliver the goods. She informs him that they have made an arrest (Zarish’s boyfriend, Nasir).

Little does she know that her team member has released Nasir on bail. We later learn that Nasir’s lawyer bribed the Police officer in question.

The Police call Babra in to give a statement, where she meets the DSP. The drama does well to explore harassment and the dynamics between women and Police officers.

On her way out of the Police station, Sarah, coming into work, spots her. Sarah’s instincts tell her that there is more than meets the eye when it comes to Barbra. She asks the DSP to call her back so she can question her.

Sarah learns about Nasir’s release and reprimands her team severely. She asks them to find him and arrest him within 24 hours.

We will have to wait before Sarah and Barbra share the screen because the DSP lets Babra go again.

Sarah’s friends and family throw a surprise birthday party for her, which triggers a repressed childhood memory that manifests itself in a nightmare. We learn that Sarah’s parents most probably met a violent death.

Our verdict: A must-watch episode of a must-watch drama serial
