Recapping episode 18 of drama serial Jaan e Jahan

In drama serial Jaan e Jahan episode 18 the school is up and running, but we learn that it has been built on disputed land. Along with more welcome items, Shehram (Hamza Ali Abbasi ) seems to have inherited the tensions between the senior Shah and Jamal, the Chief Minister. During a visit to the school, Shehram is confronted by men who want to tear down the school building on the Chief Minister’s orders. He stands his ground and the men leave.

The Chief Minister is in the midst of an election campaign, and Shehram’s good deeds, including building a school have unwittingly pitted him against Jamal. This unforeseen competition, along with the unanswered proposal to marry Shehram to his daughter, Alia (Srha Asghar), has become a problem for Jamal.

Meanwhile, Gul Zeb (Nawal Saeed) visits the Police station to file a report in connection with her husband’s murder. There she learns about the circumstances of the robbery, and the money that was in his possession.

Zeenat (Mariam Nafees) seems to have accepted that Shehram is in love with Mahnoor (Ayeza Khan), but is still firmly in Shehram’s corner. She is well aware that Kishwar (Savera Nadeem) does not wish him well.

The remaining construction of the school building is stalled because the architect, Taimoor (Emmad Irfani) is ill. Mahnoor calls him and finds out that he has an upset stomach. Mahnoor sends him homemade food. Taimoor is fond of Mahnoor. The theme song video strongly suggests that this fondness will soon turn into infatuation.

After Shehram discovers that Kishwar threw away his childhood drawings he starts avoiding her. Sensing a change, Kishwar asks her younger son, Abdul (Raza Talish), the reason. He puts the blame squarely on her, leaving Kishwar perplexed. She later makes amends with Shehram and shifts the blame for the discarded drawings on the help.

Meanwhile, Shehram surprises Mahnoor’s sister, Ayesha, on her birthday by showing up at their home with a cake.

We see Alia and Abdul exchanging text messages and photographs in a way that gives You’ve Got Mail vibes. How they met online is still a mystery, and in the era of social media and messaging apps it seems a bit unlikely that this is the first time they have seen each other’s photographs.

The episode ends when Shehram visits Jamal along with Kishwar to resolve their dispute. He is taken unawares when Jamal proposes his and Alia’s marriage.

Best fits from Jaan e Jahan episode 18

Shehram, played by Hamza Ali Abbasi, rocked a monochrome aesthetic for most of the episode, and it worked. A well-tailored, off-white kurta and pajama with a matching waistcoat lent well to Hamza’s lean frame. Tasteful gold colored buttons add some flash to the waistcoat and go well with Shehram’s gold/gold-toned watch.

Completing the outfit are coffee colored kheris. Chocolate or tan tassel loafers would have worked pretty well too. For a more formal occasion or a business meeting a black Oxford would be our choice.

Our take on Jaan e Jahan episode 18

The Hamza Abbasi and Ayeza Khan starrer Jaan e Jahan has found its groove and is very much in the zone. The chemistry between Hamza and Ayeza is excellent, we have a second villain now (more on this later), or third, if we count Tabrez, and Zeenat’s character is developing nicely and has branched off on a much better arc, than where it could have ended.

But for all its merits, Jaan e Jahan is not without its faults. For example, the depiction of pastoral life could have been a bit truer to life, especially the clothes and make-up of Mahnoor and Gul Zeb.

Our verdict: Overlooking a few issues Jaan e Jahan is coming along nicely.

Our rating: 3.5/5
