Recapping episode 24 of drama serial Sukoon

The Ahsan Khan and Sana Javed drama Sukoon is running on auto-pilot at the moment. Cue slow-motion sequences, flashbacks, close-ups, and sad, reflective music. Fortunately, the performances all around are strong, and the lead characters, Ayna (Sana Javed) and Hamdan (Ahsan Khan) do just enough to keep us interested.

Things have moved forward slowly from the last episode. While this works in favor of developing Ayna and Hamdan’s romance, it’s a missed opportunity for fast-tracking the narrative around Usman and Aima’s (Adnan Samad Khan and Qudsia Ali, respectively) troubled (read doomed) marriage.

Blowing in the wind

Meanwhile, Shanzay/Gurya’s character, played by Sidra Niazi, is blowing in the wind. This is problematic because she is an important character in the story arc, and needs further attention from the writer and director.

Episode 4 finds Shanzay recovering from heartbreak at home. Her parents are worried for her because she can’t seem to find her way out of the pit of sadness and self-pity she has fallen into.

Shanzay’s father, played by veteran actor, Usman Peerzada, takes matters into his own hands, and without telling his wife, and against her advice, goes to pay Hamdan a late-night visit. Hamdan is taken unawares but composes himself. Shanzay’s father pleads to Hamdan to make a gesture to Shanzay to reassure her that he will marry her. He suggests an engagement.

Hamdan reassures him that he will make things right with Shanzay. This puts him in a tricky position for the coming episode.

Meanwhile, Usman’s mother tries to talk sense into him and to calm tempers, but Usman is not interested in making amends.

Again, more holding hands for Hamdan and Ayna, as their slow-burning romance continues.

Our verdict: A slow episode anchored by strong performances.
